About IDEMS
UK-based IDEMS is a technology social enterprise founded in 2018 by mathematical scientists on the belief that ambitious, inclusive tech innovation was needed to address urgent social, environmental and economic challenges.
IDEMS embeds in long-term, research-based collaborations with field-leading experts, global and local organisations, and local stakeholders to conceive and develop novel innovation able to deliver social impact in and across global variability.
This approach has shaped our understanding that frontline communities (of geography and/or affiliation) hold the local understanding, experience, roles and relationships required to meaningfully adapt and improve evidence-based, expert-developed programmes and resources for their local context. The result is our novel model of “community-centred” technology.
IDEMS is a home for mathematical scientists and technologists who want to apply their expertise to complex, real-world problems to develop innovation that benefits everyone. We offer a genuine “third way” career path as an alternative to academia or industry. Our work includes developing the next generation of mathematical scientists from secondary school through to postdoctoral level.
This combination of deep collaboration and deep technical expertise has shaped IDEMS’ work across global health, education and climate resilience. Open, Adaptive Digital Textbooks draw on this experience, in addition to our team’s collective years of experience collaborating with educators around the world and working as educators ourselves.
Out of our work, we’ve developed a deep understanding of why existing technologies so often fail to deliver on their promise to improve teaching and learning – and a clear vision for the innovation needed to improve educational outcomes around the world.
